The Longing
By Ed D’Alessandro
I’m drifting to a distant land, a place of no return
I look back at life as the final pages start to turn
There’s so much I tried to do and so much I only faked
There’s so much you’ll never know in life’s long give and take
These long years have come and gone so fast
I’ve wasted so much time chasing dreams that didn’t last
These long years full of summer sun and winter rain
And after all this time, the longing in my heart still remains
I miss my kids so much sometimes I can barely breathe
I’d give up all I have if I could always keep them close to me
I was kept looking for that elusive golden ring
When it’s the love I freely gave that has always made me sing
These long years have come and gone so fast
I’ve wasted so much time chasing dreams that didn’t last
These long years full of summer sun and winter rain
And after all this time, the longing in my heart still remains
Give your love away, share your love today
Tomorrow it may be too late
These long years they come and go so fast
I’ve wasted so much time chasing dreams that didn’t last
These long years full of summer sun and winter rain
And after all this time, the longing in my heart still remains
The longing in my heart is still the same
The longing in my heart still remains
After all this time

Our Time

Our Time
By Ed D’Alessandro
We met in high school, so young and raw
Marched together in college, that pledge we swore
Never get old, don’t give up the fight
Sure of ourselves, sure we knew wrong from right
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was our time
Our diaspora flung us far apart
We stayed connected as we made our start
One loved the learning, one loved the settled life
I loved the wildness, we each loved a wife
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was our time
We crossed the country, east to the west
With work and family, we were put to the test
The laughter and love, the sorrow and pain
You were always there for me, I tried to do the same
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was our time
The years slide by and now here we are
Children grown and scattered near and far
Did we keep our pledge, did we keep our youth?
Did we know what was right, what was wrong to choose?
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was our time
I miss you two and I want you to know
There’s nowhere right now that I’d rather go
Than to be with you my friends and share that beer
With the ones I’ve shared so much over all these years
With the ones so far away, but who feel so near
Through the best of times, through the worst of times
Through our time

Beanie, The Bear, and Boo
By Ed D'Alessandro
I once was lost, but now I’m found
You came in summer and smiled at us
With eyes so big and blue
And then you grew to be the sweetest thing
That we ever knew
That time you hid inside your crib
And we thought we’d lost our girl
Then we found you fast asleep
That was such a lovely world
Just when I thought I knew it all
And I had all I needed too
I had no idea how hard I could fall
Fall for the three of you, for Beanie, The Bear, and Boo
You came in winter and filled our homes
With a voice that wouldn’t quit
And when you sang and danced for us
We knew you’d be a hit
That time we crashed and flipped our sled
And you thought you’d heard a crack
We lay laughing in the snow
I’d never give those times back
Just when I thought….
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
A dollar says in God we trust
Ashes ashes, all fall down
I was lost but now I’m found
You came from far across the sea
No time to get prepared
For all the faces new and strange
That must have made you scared
That time you broke your Christmas toy
And I picked you up so fast
Now I know you were helping me
I wish I could have made those times last
Just when I thought…
Fall for the three of you
For Juliet, Tessa, and Emma too

Waiting on Our Dad to Pass
By Ed D'Alessandro
He doesn’t have much time, my sisters said
So I flew back to be by his bed
We held his hand and kissed his head
We were waiting on our dad to pass
His breathe so ragged and so slow
So hard for him to let go
Hard to leave behind the life you know
We were waiting on our dad to pass
Time’s a thing you can never understand
You live your life and do the best you can
Then one day you’re staring at an empty glass
And waiting on your dad to pass
Our mom left us all in twenty ten
Soon they’ll be together again
We sit around and remember when
Waiting on our dad to pass
One good mom and one good dad
They made the best of what they had
We’re all the better for the love they shared
Waiting on our dad to pass
Time’s a thing…
Wise men say we struggle to live
Then we struggle to die
Maybe we’ll understand it all
In the by and by
I see him now but he’s not the same
I wish there was someone I could blame
His last turn in the human game
Waiting on our dad to pass
Took a walk under a shifting sky
Watched the clouds go drifting by
Felt the tears fill my eyes
We were waiting on our dad…. waiting on our dad to pass

Ms Julie Belle
By Ed D'Alessandro
If your life is falling apart
You got yourself a broken heart
You’ll come out of your shell
When you’re with Ms Julie Belle
She’ll make you laugh and try some kissin’
Forget about all the things you’ve been missin’
You’ll say well well well
Glad to meet you Ms Julie Belle
If you got the blues, the old boo hoos
And you can’t seem to win for losin’
She’ll tip the scales, turn your heads to tails
And set your life running back on the rails
She’ll fill your sails
Great big smile lights up the night
Cutest head full of curls so tight
It’s easy to see how you fell
Fell for Ms Julie Belle
She calls herself a peasant girl
But she’s the queen of your world
You’ll say well well well
Glad to meet you Ms Julie Belle
If you got the blues….
You’ll be wondering how you ever lived
Without the loving that she gives you
Things are always swell
When you’re with Ms Julie Belle
She likes to hug and get all smoochie
Make you feel so hoochie coochie
You’ll say well well well
Glad to meet you Ms Julie Belle
It’s easy to see how you fell
Fell for Ms Julie Belle

You’re My Guy
By Ed D'Alessandro
You’re my guy, you’re my guy
I never have to worry, I never have to wonder why
You make every day a joy, just to be alive
I feel all my cares fall away, when you say “you’re my guy”
I’m your gal, I’m your gal
I never have to worry, I never have to wonder how
When I hold you in my arms, I hold my life-long pal
I feel all my cares fall away, when you say “I’m your gal”
There’s no love, there’s your love
Not in this world, not in the stars above
When I look into your eyes, it’s all I’m thinking of
I feel all my cares fall away, when you say “there’s no love”
I feel all my cares fall away, when you say “like your love”
There’s no love, like your love

The Canyons
By Ed D'Alessandro
Lost in the desert, hot as hell
How long I wandered, no way to tell
Deep in the canyons, no way out
No one hears, when I shout
The sun is blinding, the sky’s too much
Rocks are burning to the touch
I look for shelter, I look for shade
Hot and hungry, so afraid
You pulled me back from the brink
Your kiss was like a long cool drink
I need your love, I need it now
Don’t let me go, don’t let me drop back down
Don’t let me drop back down
Don’t let me drop back down
Walking thirsty, all alone
No one to turn to, nowhere to go
I hear your voice inside my head
The canyons echo with the words we’ve said
You pulled me back…
High on the cliffs, far above
Are you there, or a shadow of our love
You pulled me back…

January, 2017
By Ed D'Alessandro
In my darkest hour, when there is no dawn
It’s the dark night of my soul, and I can’t go on
Fear has taken all my hope, left a bitter cup
I’m scared for what’s ahead, and I want to give up
If I reach out for something to hold on to
I reach out for something to embrace
I reach out for someone in all this darkness
And you are there for me, my saving grace
In your darkest hour, when there is no dawn
It’s the dark night of your soul, and you can’t go on
Fear has taken all your hope, left an empty cup
You’re scared of what’s ahead, and you just want to give up
If you reach out for something to hold on to
If you reach out for something to embrace
I’ll be there for you in all this darkness
I’ll be a light for you, your saving grace
Reach out and take my hand
Together we’ll make a stand, we’ll take a stand
In the darkest winter, the sun’s not strong
The days are short and cold, and I can’t stay warm
But I know the light must come, I know it’s on the way
This dark must break apart, for the start of day
If you reach out for something to believe in
If you reach out for something to embrace
You’ll find men and women right there beside you
Who will be there for you, they’ll be a light for you
They will see you through
We’re all one race, it’s our saving grace
Reach out and take my hand

Lighter Than Air
By Ed D'Alessandro
You had the world on a string
You were a queen and you had a king
When it all fell apart
When you lost your heart
It flew off lighter than air
There’s nothing holding you down
Friends are gone and there’s no one else around
You need to start over now
If you only knew how
Before you fly off lighter than air
Long nights alone, lonely nights at home
You’re on your own again
Good times don’t last, the goodbyes come too fast
You just need a friend
I’ve felt the darkness closing in
I’ve faced the fear of risking it all again
If I can learn to dance
Then you can take the chance
We could fly off lighter than air
Long nights alone….
If I can learn to dance
Then you can take the chance
We can fly off lighter than air

Break the Glass
By Ed D'Alessandro
The Amazon is burning
The Tundra’s turned to smoke
The Indonesians are breathing
Air that makes them choke
Oceans keep rising
Storms keep getting worse
We’re close to the tipping point
When the damage can’t be reversed
The world is burning
And no one gets a pass
In case of fire
You need to break the glass
Seven billion people
The earth can’t take the strain
Millions will get swept away
And the poorest will feel the pain
Our leaders ignore the facts
They’re full of pious thoughts and prayers
It’s like we’re on the Titanic
And they’re rearranging chairs
While the world keeps burning…
Young people asking questions
They got a right to know
What’s gonna be left for them
When they get to take control
They want a green revolution
They want to have a say
They know that we can save the earth
But we need to start today
The world is burning….
You need to smash the glass
