A Baby’s Eyes

A friend of mine let me know that his child gave birth today
Right now it seems birth announcements are always coming my way
When I was young and cynical I didn’t want to have kids -- no way, no how
I didn’t want to bring a kid into such a messed-up world -- but look at me now

Now my kids are having children, kids their own
And they’ll probably have them too when they’re all grown
Where do we all find so much faith and so much hope?
Where do we find the courage that lets us cope?

The news of the world still fills me with despair
There’s so much trouble, so much that gets me scared
It’s hard to see what’s good, easy to see what’s wrong
There’s nothing real that seems to last for very long

The day it came to me, I didn’t even try
On a visit to my daughter to see her newborn child
I felt a shift inside, like the ground beneath me shook
My heart and spirit leapt up when I looked

In that baby’s eyes, a life I hadn’t seen before
In that baby’s eyes, the promise of so much more
In that baby’s eyes, the strength to make your way
In that baby’s eyes, a joy for all your days

Through my empty days and nights
Through all my petty fights
I forgot why I was here
Without a word
Without being heard
