My name is Jody Baines
And I work this valley land
I raise some stock, I grow some crops
I like to use my hands

It’s never been an easy life
It’s a struggle to make ends meet
But we loved our little paradise
The morning air that smelled so sweet

The summer was so blister dry
It was a hard to keep things going
Seems like years since it’s rained
And the hot wind keeps on blowing

Then late one night we got a call
About a big burn up on 29 Mile Peak
We saw the glow up on the ridge
And the smoke down by the creek

We grabbed what we could
Threw it in the pickup bed
We loaded up the kids
Jumped our the truck and fled

It was hard to leave it all behind
Lord knows I’m still in shock
A man learns what he loves most
When he’s between a hard place and a rock

We looked up from town
And saw the smoke fill the sky
That’s when Jenny turned to me
and she began to cry

I held her close as the flames ran higher
The night we lost our home to the 29 Mile Fire
The flames ran higher
The smoke filled the sky

Now our home’s a smoking ruin
Our land is burned and black
There’s no place here for us now
There ain’t no going back

I’d heard people say the weather’s changed for good
But I would never buy it
I look around me now and wonder
…Can I deny it
